The Russian nuclear cruiser Admiral Nakhimov is set to conduct sea trials between August and September, according to a source from the defense industry reported by the Sputnik agency.
The vessel, which has already undergone system and equipment checks, is in the final stages of preparation, including training of the crew responsible for the trials. The exact date of departure will depend on the full readiness of the ship.
Repairs on the vessel were completed in July, as announced by Andrei Kostin, chairman of the United Shipbuilding Corporation and CEO of VTB Bank. In February, presidential adviser Nikolai Patrushev had already emphasized that the cruiser would receive state-of-the-art armament and return to service soon, boosting Russia’s naval power.
Built in the late 1980s, the Admiral Nakhimov belongs to the Orlan class of nuclear-powered heavy cruisers and has been undergoing modernization since 2013. With a displacement of over 25,000 tons, it is the largest surface ship of the Russian Navy, designed to engage large naval targets and provide air and anti-submarine defense.
