The European Union has given the green light to the purchase of MotoGP by Liberty Media, an American company that already owns Formula 1.
The acquisition, announced last April, was officially approved after an investigation by the European Commission, which concluded that the deal does not threaten competitiveness in the distribution of sports rights within the European Economic Area.
With this, Liberty Media will control 84% of MotoGP shares, while the remaining 16% will remain under the management of the category itself, led by Carmelo Ezpeleta. The transaction, valued at $5.71 billion, is expected to be completed by July 3. The company sees MotoGP as an asset with high growth potential and plans to expand the competition’s global reach.
Created in 1949, MotoGP is the world’s premier motorcycle racing championship and has crowned idols such as Valentino Rossi and Marc Marquez. Liberty Media, which also bought Formula 1 in 2016, thus strengthens its presence in the world of motorsports.
