Nissan may sell its global headquarters in Yokohama, Japan, valued at around $700 million, as part of a broad restructuring plan to face financial difficulties. The information was reported by outlets such as Nikkei Asia and NHK, which point out that the building appears on a list of assets to be sold by March 2026.
However, the automaker may continue operating on site through a lease agreement with the future buyer, a strategy similar to one previously adopted by other companies in the sector, such as McLaren.
The decision is part of a series of cuts following a $4.5 billion loss last year. Nissan plans to close seven factories, including two in Japan, and cut about 20,000 jobs. Additionally, it is ending the development of some models and reducing vehicle platforms from 13 to 7. Another goal is to simplify production, decreasing by 70% the variety of parts used in cars.
The company is also reorganizing its research and development team, reallocating about 3,000 employees to focus on cost-reduction initiatives. To remain competitive, it intends to strengthen partnerships with Renault and Mitsubishi and is considering allowing its Chinese partner Dongfeng to produce vehicles in currently idle factories.
After the failed merger with Honda, Nissan is seeking ways to sustain itself independently.
