The Belgian Army has started testing the Cockerill i-X, a hybrid armored vehicle developed by the local company John Cockerill Defense.
The tests are being conducted by the 1st/3rd Lancers Battalion of the Motorized Brigade, with authorization from the Belgian Ministry of Defense. According to the battalion commander, this is a valuable opportunity to strengthen cooperation between industry, the armed forces, and academia.

Introduced in 2023, the Cockerill i-X combines combat capabilities with performance inspired by off-road competitions. The vehicle can operate with a hybrid or conventional engine and features a stealth-oriented design, with a retractable weapon module that reduces its detection during movement.
Its technologies include integrated sensors, artificial intelligence, cameras, acoustic shot detection system, and compatibility with smart helmets. The combat module is adaptable, capable of carrying machine guns, cannons up to 30 mm, and guided missiles.
This is the first full armored vehicle from John Cockerill Defense, a company previously focused on weapon systems and armored vehicle modernization. In 2024, it acquired the French manufacturer Arquus, strengthening its position in the sector. The merger of the two companies is expected to generate more competitive and innovative solutions for ground forces worldwide.
