During the 76th anniversary celebrations of the People’s Liberation Army Navy of China, details were released about an upgraded version of the Type 094 nuclear submarine, called the Type 094A. This new variant features significant improvements in speed, stealth, and deep-sea operational capability.

According to the information disclosed, the submarine now reaches approximately 56 km/h, operates at depths of up to 400 meters, and has a displacement of 11,000 tons, marking an advancement over the previous version.

The Type 094A is powered by a pressurized nuclear reactor driving a steam turbine connected to a single shaft, and incorporates modern technologies to reduce vibrations and noise, such as quieter propellers or pump-jet propulsion.

The vessel can accommodate between 120 and 140 crew members and is equipped with six 533 mm torpedo tubes capable of launching Yu-6 torpedoes with a range of over 30 km, in addition to threat detection systems and sonar countermeasures.

In terms of strategic weaponry, the submarine carries up to 12 JL-2 ballistic missiles with nuclear warheads, capable of reaching targets up to 7,000 km away—covering much of the Pacific and even parts of the United States. It is speculated that these missiles use the Beidou navigation system, China’s equivalent to GPS, for enhanced accuracy.

China currently operates six submarines of the Jin class and is working on the next generation, the Type 096, which is expected to bring even further advancements.
