Nissan has unveiled a new plug-in hybrid pickup called the Frontier Pro in China, based on the Dongfeng Z9. Although it shares the name with the Frontier sold in North America, the models are completely different.

The Frontier Pro features a 1.5 turbo engine combined with an electric motor integrated into the transmission, delivering 402 hp and 800 Nm of torque. According to Nissan, the electric-only range can reach about 134 km, with sales expected to begin in China later this year, along with export plans, although the arrival on the North American market is not guaranteed due to commercial reasons.

Meanwhile, the current generation of the Frontier in the U.S. has undergone a facelift, with improvements in appearance, towing capacity, and connectivity, but it still faces strong competition in the mid-size pickup segment. The next generation, expected in 2028, is expected to include a plug-in hybrid version, which could represent a major step forward. According to Nissan, electrification is necessary for the model to remain competitive and comply with environmental requirements.

Ponz Pandikuthira, an executive at Nissan North America, stated that the plug-in hybrid system is best suited to preserve the vehicle’s ruggedness, versatility, and efficiency. He also revealed that in the future, Nissan plans to unify the Frontier with the Navara pickup on a new global platform capable of accommodating various types of powertrains, including hybrid and combustion versions.
