Between January and March 2025, Ukraine imported about 130,000 civilian drones, totaling US$ 371.3 million in purchases, a 39% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

The vast majority, about 98%, came from China and was exempt from customs duties, according to the country’s State Customs Service.

These drones, although originally intended for civilian use, have played a strategic role in the war against Russia. They are used for reconnaissance missions, artillery targeting, and destruction of enemy targets. Their main advantages are low cost, ease of operation, and optical features such as night vision. However, they face limitations in terms of range, autonomy, and resistance to electronic interference.

The most used models by Ukrainian forces include the DJI Mavic 3 (and its Pro and 3T variants), the DJI Matrice 300, and the Autel Evo Max 4T. Initially, these devices were purchased with personal funds by soldiers, volunteers, and charitable organizations. Since last year, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has started investing directly in acquiring these drones to support the war effort.
