The UK government has disclosed the costs associated with training Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots in response to parliamentary questions from MP Mark Francois.
Following these inquiries, Luke Pollard, Minister of Defence, provided details on the amount required to train pilots up to Phase 2 of Military Flight Training and the delays faced by trainees waiting for slots in frontline aircraft.
Pollard emphasized that the cost varies depending on the aircraft. “The average flight training cost for Royal Air Force (RAF) pilots in the 2021-2022 fiscal year was as follows: RAF Fast Jet: £5,362,085; RAF Multi Engine: £953,817; RAF Rotary Wing: £1,041,843.”
He also stated that these figures include “salaries, support costs, and costs within the UK Military Flying Training System (UKMFTS) contract up to the point where a trainee pilot begins training on a frontline aircraft as part of an Operational Conversion Unit.”
