On a highway in São Paulo, Brazil, a concerning phenomenon has been occurring: the accumulation of hubcaps on the sides of the road.

The problem is more visible on the curves of the mountain descent, where the pieces detach from car wheels due to the road’s slope and the intense use of brakes. These hubcaps form piles of plastic on the sides of the road, posing a safety risk to drivers.

In response to the situation, the Department of Roads and Highways (DER-SP) has adopted measures to mitigate the impact. A team of about 10 employees performs weekly hubcap collection, removing more than 2,000 pieces per month.

The concentration of the problem occurs between kilometers 79 and 86 of the Oswaldo Cruz highway (SP-125), near the state’s northern coastline, where the heat generated from braking damages the parts, especially the front ones. Models secured with screws are also not immune to wear.

To prevent accidents, the DER-SP has marked the highway, advising drivers to descend in gear and to respect the maximum speed of 20 km/h on that stretch. The collected hubcaps are not returned to the owners but sent for recycling at selective collection points.

The highway, which experiences heavy traffic especially in the summer, requires constant care to ensure the safety of drivers.
