Toyota has just introduced a new technological feature in its most luxurious SUV, the Century: side windows with adjustable opacity, aimed at rear passengers.

The system, called Digital Curtain, was developed by Japanese company AGC and works through a film inserted between two laminated glass panels. When an electric current is applied, the glass can shift between three levels of transparency (clear, semi-transparent, and opaque), offering greater privacy and blocking up to 99% of UV rays.

While this technology has been used in panoramic sunroofs of luxury cars since the 2000s — such as in Ferrari and Mercedes models — this is the first time it has been applied to door windows.

In the Century SUV, the system is featured only in the rear side windows, while the sunroof remains conventional glass with an electric curtain. The feature is now available to order in the 2026 model in Japan.

Produced under strict quality control and aimed at a highly demanding audience, the Century SUV costs around US$182,000. In addition to technological innovations, Toyota is planning new versions of the model, including one with a minivan-style sliding door and a sporty edition from Gazoo Racing, already used by the company’s president, Akio Toyoda.

Originally restricted to the Japanese market, the SUV has also started being sold in China and may reach other countries soon.
