103 Nikola hydrogen trucks go up for auction after electric vehicle startup bankruptcy (Instagram @nikolamotorcompany)
Nikola, an electric and hydrogen truck startup, declared bankruptcy in February after troubled years and scandals involving its founder, Trevor Milton, convicted of fraud.
Now, the startup’s assets are being auctioned, including 103 Nikola Tre FCEV trucks, hydrogen refueling equipment, spare parts, and industrial systems. The trucks are described as operational and represent a significant portion of the company’s production, which delivered several hundred units between 2022 and 2024.
The Tre FCEV model, aimed at heavy transport, combines a 164 kWh battery with a hydrogen fuel cell, offering up to 800 km of range and 536 hp of continuous power. Despite this, there are doubts about the reliability of these vehicles, as the company faced technical problems, such as battery-related fires, as well as limited hydrogen refueling infrastructure in the U.S.
Despite these challenges, the auction may attract startups interested in repurposing Nikola’s assets. One example is Lucid Motors, which has already acquired the company’s facilities in Arizona and plans to employ over 300 former employees.
This move indicates that, despite Nikola’s end, part of its structure and technology can still be utilized by other companies in the electric automotive sector.
